It took nearly 17 years after the crash for T.B. Buchannon to work up enough courage to get back into an airplane again. 17 years ago next month he had crashed while attempting to land at Evan’s Memorial Airport in Crestwood, Tennessee. He had been flying The Marrietta<\/em> \u2013 his newly bought small plane \u2013 and, while anticipating a dinner date that night, he had crashed into the north face of Pine Knob. Pine Knob was the tallest mountain in the county, and the airport was located dangerously close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Neither he nor the plane had been seriously injured, and he had gotten out of the hospital in four days \u2013 with a cast on his arm. He had had terrible nightmares for a few weeks, and decided to see a psychiatrist. Two months and a good deal of money later, he was cured completely of his nightmares, but not of his fear of flying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He had had the plane rebuilt a few months after the crash, but he could not bring himself to go near the plane \u2013 and he gave up trying a number of years later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He had decided a few weeks ago that today, on his 50th birthday, he would fly the plane once again. Overcoming his fear, he had flown nearly all morning, and now he was starting to come back for a landing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To celebrate his birthday, he was having dinner with a now-widowed former girlfriend. He believed that he still loved her, and he couldn\u2019t wait to see her again\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n
