\u201cThis is too early in the morning to listen to this crud,\u201d one said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYou know it. I almost didn’t come,\u201d the other replied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYou’d figure that…\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cShhh, listen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201c…wondered what a creature from an alien race would look like. Would it be like us, or would it be some sort of sapient turtle, or… “<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI thought this was supposed to be a \u2018classical civilizations’ lecture,\u201d the first student interjected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “It was, shhh.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201c…or some form<\/em><\/em> that we cannot even imagine?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThere are many conflicting opinions on this. Most feel that for another planet to have intelligent life, ecological conditions of the planet would have to be identical with those of ours. They feel that similar or identical conditions have to produce similar or identical intelligent beings.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI disagree on both counts\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThey\u2019d have to be like us, wouldn’t they?\u201d the first student asked the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI don’t see how they couldn’t,\u201d replied the second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “Then let’s get out of here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n “Okay,” agreed the second with a wave of a claw, and the two scuttled toward the exit and the great open seas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I had two versions of this story stapled together — one was more vanilla and not really going anywhere.
