Written in high school. Not very sophisticated or exciting — I’d like to think my writing has improved over the years…<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Five or six years ago, northeast of the town I used to live in, a few of my friends and I went to visit an old man who used to live at the edge of the woods. I don’t believe that any of us knew his name, nor he ours — we just called him \u2018sir\u2019 and he called us \u2018boys\u2019 — but every Friday after school the four of us would meet by the railroad tracks and set off on our weekly hike to the old man’s house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was easy to get away from town, because the town was laid out along the river in the middle of the valley — and just a little bit of hill climbing brought us to virgin woods that could have been miles and miles from the nearest community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I believe the word \u2018venerable\u2019 would have fitted the old man perfectly because he was very old and knowledgeable, and we respected him and his stories a lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He told us of his ancestors, and about the legends of the hills — and he had that quality when speaking that made all of his stories interesting, and we never wanted to go home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One visit about five or six years ago brought us to his house, but he was not on the porch awaiting us like he usually was. We searched his house and found his kettle on the fire like it always was when we visited — containing some of his homemade tea — but there was no sign of him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We came back every Friday for a few months, and then slacked off to about one visit every couple of months. We never saw him again, and gave up after a year, but I think his memory will always stay in my mind.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
