Time to break out one of my full-blown, longer poems. I’ve labeled it ‘classic plus’ because, though I originally wrote it years ago, I’ve ‘stayed in touch’ with it over the years, occasionally rewriting\/refining the wording to improve it. My goal has been to take a dozen or so of my complete, longer poems and connect them with a coherent narrative — with the result being something structured like Alice’s <\/em>Adventures in Wonderland or <\/em>Through the Looking Glass. I suspect that Lewis Carroll may have followed a similar path — taking a set of poems he had written, extracting the characters, and creating a story around them which allowed the poems themselves to be included.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

As the Joker said, “and…here…we…go”<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\n

The Preacher comes to visit us
\nA dozen times a week.
\nHe comes so bless-ed often,
\nAnd Lordy does he speak!
\nAt night or noon or morning
\nYou\u2019ll likely find him there;
\nScreaming out his warning
\nAstride the Preacher\u2019s Chair.<\/p>\n

The Preacher\u2019s Chair is empty
\nWhen the Preacher ain\u2019t around.
\nGrandpa used to sit there
\n\u2018Fore the Preacher came to town.
\nBut the Preacher\u2019s got the recipe
\nFor emptying that seat \u2013
\nDon\u2019t tell the Preacher \u2018bout your sins,
\nHe knows when to repeat!<\/p>\n

The Preacher talks to Jimmy \u2013
\nHow he lectures to that lad!
\nTells him that he\u2019ll go to Blazes
\n‘Cause he\u2019s been so bad.
\nBut Mama thinks that Jimmy,
\nHe\u2019s been good beyond compare.
\nAnd someday when the Preacher\u2019s gone
\nHe\u2019ll fill the Preacher\u2019s Chair.<\/p>\n

The Preacher\u2019s Chair is gone now,
\nBut it\u2019ll soon be back.
\nThe Preacher still comes all the time,
\nAnd Lordy does he yack!
\nNow when the Preacher needs to sit,
\nHe can do it anywhere.
\n\u2018Cause Jimmy spread a pot of glue
